The one trait of a good relationship?

What’s the one good trait of a great relationship? I can probably name more than a dozen, to be honest. Stuff like trust, loyalty, integrity, honesty, respect, communication, … Ok, I got stuck at 6 but you know the drill or you can use your good old friend Google to find some other good traits. And no treating someone as your priority is not on the list. People keep mentioning this one and I have no clue why. I would swim from Belgium to Mexico and start a new life as Jésus the taco salesman if I would have such a girlfriend. I had an ex like that and my phone exploded if I didn’t respond instantly. She also always wanted to be around me when she didn’t have any plans. Might sound like heaven but it wasn’t.

There is only one person that should be your priority and that is you! And then people say stuff like: you’re just a selfish jerk no wonder you’re single. You can be selfish in a good way. Treating another person as your priority is weird and pretty selfish if you ask me. You ask them to devote all their time to you. Could you please explain the logic behind that mindset? Is it because you can’t be alone? Because you have no clue how to spend your time? Isn’t that a selfish act? You try to control another person’s life. It doesn’t get more selfish than that if you ask me. Oh, I’m making new friends once again.

The one trait of a good relationship?

So what is the one trait of a good relationship? The answer is easy: sacrifice. I’m not claiming it’s the only one but it is an important one. Hear me out on this one. Being single has a ton of benefits. You can do what you want, chase dreams and you don’t have to respond to anybody. That’s probably why I was single for the majority of my 20’s. I just focused on my future. I probably wouldn’t do this when I was 52 with 3 kids. The reason why I chose sacrifice is easy. Most people who get into a relation want to keep on living like they were single.

That just doesn’t work out. You can’t live the playboy party lifestyle in a relationship (there are other examples of course but the playboy party lifestyle is an easy example.). You have to sacrifice things in other to make it work and that’s applicable for both parties since it takes 2 to tango.

The one trait of a good relationship? But where do we draw the line?

There are things that you can and should sacrifice and things that aren’t worth sacrificing. For me, that would be fighting and blogging. They’re a huge part of my life right now and those 2 helped me to get where I’m at today. So that’s where understanding comes in. People have to understand that some things just can’t be sacrificed because they’re creating a better life for a certain person. I never understood people who stopped going to the gym when they were in a relationship. It doesn’t make sense, why would you sacrifice a healthy habit?

Might be me though.

So what do you want?

It’s easy to say what you don’t want. Everybody can do that. But what would you be willing to sacrifice? What would you be willing to give up for something far more important (the relationship in case you were wondering)? That’s a lot of stuff to process because deep down inside people have no clue what they want. They never define that because that’s just something that doesn’t happen in our society.

These days we focus on what we don’t want and then get what we don’t want because we were focusing on it from the start.

The one trait of a good relationship? One simple question to end this post.

But in the end, I have one simple question. You see to get where I’m at today I had to ‘sacrifice’ free time, parties, time with friends and family, trips to exotic locations in Thailand, sometimes sleep and so on. This goes for a lot of people who’re trying to achieve something.

So here comes my question: is it a sacrifice if you stop doing something that doesn’t benefit you, your relationship or your future anyways?! Is it a sacrifice if it serves something bigger? I let you debate on that one in the comment section.
