If you’re coming to Thailand to train or fight, living at the gym is worth serious consideration—especially if you’re single. I get asked a lot why anyone would choose a gym over a proper condo. Since I moved into the gym myself after a breakup, the question comes up even more.
The endless midlife crisis jokes definitely made it more entertaining. But moving in at the gym was a calculated move from my end, and here’s why you might want to make the same one.
The tourist vs. the dedicated fighter.
When foreigners walk into Thai gyms, the Thais often don’t know what to expect. Are they serious, or just here for a quick Muay Thai vacation? Unlike Thai fighters—who are the backbone of the gym—foreigners come and go. That said, things are changing. Foreigners bring reliable monthly income, and that makes them easier to work with.
The Thais, on the other hand, are either at the gym from a very young age, or they get bought and come over from the provinces to fight for their new gym. They all have one thing in common, though. They all live at the gym. Yes, you read it correctly. They live at the gym; fighters, trainers, and even the big superstars still live at the gym. The difference between the up-and-coming fighters and the superstars is that the latter have more allowances.
Now picture a foreigner in this environment. They live off-site and might miss a session for a valid reason—being sick, for example. But from the gym’s perspective, it often just looks like you didn’t show up.
The foreigner living in Thailand.
Most foreigners living in Thailand need some kind of side income—unless they’re signed with One Championship or RWS. Those promotions can afford to pay well. But for everyone else, stadium fight purses rarely cover the cost of living. Some try the Thai approach—fighting often just to get by—but it’s a brutal path. I’ve seen people wreck their health and careers chasing it.
That’s why many foreigners take jobs or run online businesses on the side. But to most Thais, this is a strange concept. Why fight if you can make money another way? To them, it feels backwards—and they’ll often assume you’re doing it just for fun. Unfortunately, that assumption can limit your opportunities. They will keep sending you to the smaller shows. Which results in lower-level opponents and a lower paycheck.
One way to bypass that bias is simple: live at the gym. It immediately changes how Thais see you. Hobbyists rarely go that far. Sure, some do—but they won’t grind through every session. That line between tourist and serious fighter becomes clear very quickly.
Once you’ve earned their respect, moving out of the gym isn’t a big deal—they’ll still take you seriously. Most foreign fighters move out because of relationship changes. And when those relationships end, well… the reason they move back in kind of explains itself.
The ups and downs of living at a gym.
Let’s start with the positives. Personally, I don’t see any real downsides—but I get that a few things I’ve experienced might be dealbreakers for others.
The ups of living at a Thai gym
One of the biggest perks? You’re right next to the gym. Showing up becomes effortless. Even better, you’re already sleeping where you’ll cut weight. That might not sound like a big deal—until you’ve tried commuting through Bangkok traffic while half-dead in the final stages of a cut.
But what often gets overlooked is that you’ll obviously be living with training partners. This camaraderie is beneficial when recovering in between training sessions (read more about it here). Especially if you have a really tight group. Feeling tired is easier if you’re not the only one.
The downsides of living at a Thai gym
So what are the downsides? For starters, I lift three mornings a week instead of joining the regular sessions. The first time I skipped training for this, I got a barrage of questions. Luckily, my gym understands the importance of strength and conditioning—but many Thai gyms are still very traditional. To them, skipping pads might just look like you’re not taking it seriously. The stigma is fading, but there’s still a long way to go.
Another downside: skipping training isn’t taken lightly. One time, I had an upset stomach—thanks, spicy papaya salad—and couldn’t train in the morning. They seemed to understand. But by the afternoon, the head of camp saw me, said I looked better, and told me to join… just no pad work. I hadn’t eaten all day and felt like death—but I finished the session, minus one desperate sprint to the toilet. Could’ve been worse, right?
In the end, whether or not you live at the gym is totally your call.
But I’d encourage you to have this experience at least once in your life. A couple of months without excess luxury won’t hurt you. Like Marvin Hagler said, “It’s tough to get out of bed to do roadwork at 5am when you’ve been sleeping in silk sheets.”
If anything, it’ll teach you something valuable—something about what really matters in life.
